STATE AUTO INSURANCE HEADQUARTERS

State Auto Insurance needed to modernize its historic downtown Columbus office building into a dynamic, collaborative workplace that would support the company's evolution from a regional insurance provider to a national industry leader while maximizing space efficiency.

  • WSA implemented the Pulse research process to understand State Auto's organizational structure, developing a comprehensive campus site plan that reimagined the workplace. The design added 20,000 square feet of meeting space by replacing private offices with huddle rooms and collaborative areas. A modern glass entryway complements the existing exterior, while an adjacent outdoor pavilion connects the office to the Discovery District.

Innovative environmental features became a hallmark of the redesign. Two green roofs were implemented to capture carbon dioxide and provide urban wildlife habitats, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

The spatial design emphasized transparency and connectivity, with carefully curated amenities including a cafeteria, coffee bar, and grab-and-go options that support employee flexibility and wellness. Thoughtful environmental graphics and material selections reinforced State Auto's brand identity while creating an engaging and inspirational work environment.

By optimizing their existing space, the company nearly doubled its workforce while remaining centrally located. The design resulted in a 10% reduction in operational carbon dioxide emissions and enabled a partnership with a national insurance group.
