MOLYET VILLAGE COMMUNITY BUILDING
Isolated student housing at Ohio State's Mansfield regional campus created disconnection from academic life, posing the question: how do you bridge physical and social distance to help residents feel genuinely part of the university community?
-
Following comprehensive site planning, the design creates a strategically located community hub maximizing interaction with adjacent residential buildings. The architectural approach employs transparency as both physical strategy and metaphorical statement — extensive glass facades visually dissolve boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.
Interior balances community gathering with privacy opportunities through thoughtfully articulated spatial sequence. A large central gathering room serves as student interaction heart while private study spaces support focused academic work. Social amenities including game room lounge, kitchenette, and indoor/outdoor fireplaces create varied environments for connection.
Materials and forms communicate both distinctive Ohio State brand identity and warm, residential quality. The building's dual-sided fireplace becomes the central organizing element, creating gathering points extending usefulness throughout Ohio's seasonal changes.
This community hub fundamentally transformed student experience at Molyet Village, significantly increasing resident engagement with campus life. Recognized with a 2020 AIA Columbus Merit Award, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design addresses complex challenges of student belonging through architectural interventions.
