HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH
Columbus, Ohio
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church needed to reimagine their worship space to bring their congregation closer together during services while creating a more visible and welcoming presence in the community — all while maintaining continuous worship during construction.
CHALLENGE
SOLUTION
WSA approached this transformation by first understanding the existing T-shaped sanctuary's inherent qualities rather than fighting against them. This deep appreciation for the building's architectural DNA informed a strategy that would honor its heritage while addressing the congregation's evolving needs.
The design positions a new sanctuary closer to the street, dramatically increasing the church's visibility and community presence. This strategic relocation allowed the congregation to continue worshiping in the original space during construction —maintaining spiritual continuity while building for the future. The new sanctuary's design eliminates the division that characterized the previous space, creating a unified worship environment where the entire congregation feels connected to both the service and each other.
Large windows and transparent elements showcase the church's activities to passersby, visually inviting the community to engage with the congregation. Inside, thoughtful spatial arrangements support various gathering sizes, while maintaining acoustical quality and visual connection throughout. Environmental graphics and material selections create a cohesive journey from street to sanctuary, guiding visitors while reinforcing the church's welcoming mission.
The renovation thoughtfully balances contemporary worship needs with respectful stewardship of the church's architectural heritage. This harmonious integration of old and new creates a worship environment that feels simultaneously fresh and grounded in tradition.
IMPACT
The transformed church has strengthened Holy Trinity's presence in the community, with increased participation in both worship services and community outreach programs. Beyond serving the congregation, the renovated church has become a more active community resource, hosting neighborhood events and providing gathering spaces that serve diverse community needs
