BATH & BODY WORKS
An international beauty company's scattered research and development teams required unification in a single environment that could accommodate specialized laboratory functions while fostering cross-functional collaboration.
-
The design organizes research functions into distinct neighborhoods with transparent boundaries, creating visual connections throughout the facility. A floating statement stair serves as the central armature between workplace functions, establishing cross-discipline transparency through two-story openings and full-height glass partitions. Strategic window insertions into the existing warehouse façade flood the interior with natural light, transforming the utilitarian metal envelope into an inviting research campus.
Community spaces — a café with autonomous checkout, collaborative conference areas, and break zones — function as transitional territories between neighborhoods. These programmed destinations enable self-directed movement throughout the day while maintaining visual coherence with the Bath & Body Works’ home office design language.
The spatial reorganization dissolves larger business units into manageable neighborhoods where teams report enhanced focus and reduced stress. Individual contributors note improved personal space allocation alongside maintained collaborative capacity, directly enabling faster implementation of innovative initiatives. This design was recognized with an AIA Ohio Honor Award in 2020.
